Ankit Keshri, former under-19 cricket captain of West Bengal died after an injury caused by colliding with the team mate while attempting for a catch in a club match on Friday. Ankit was playing as a substitute fielder in the cricket match and collided with his team mate when both the players made effort for a high catch.
After the collision, Ankit lost consciousness for a brief period and was rushed to hospital. There he suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday and died early in the morning on Monday, April 20, 2015. Four months ago, in November 2014, Australian Cricketer Phillip Hughes died as he got hit by a bouncer.
“It is so unfortunate. He was such a promising cricketer and for him to pass away in such a manner is difficult to swallow,” said Subir Ganguly, joint secretary, Cricket Association of Bengal.
As per the local media, team-mate Shivsagar Singh observed Ankit Keshri being struck in head and neck region by knee of Sourav Mondal, who was bowling. It is unfortunate for the game which is also known as ‘Gentlemen’s Game’ to lose players because of on-field injuries.
