Our calendar shows that 8th march is International Woman’s Day. On this occasion, I was asked to write an article on gender equality which just goes to show that even though we preach about it, it is not yet a reality, since we still have to address it. What does Woman's Day actually signify? What is the importance of this day in anybody’s life? Why do we even celebrate this day? Is it actually a part of our lifestyle? Do we really have to celebrate it? Did you know that women’s day is celebrated worldwide in order to show respect, love, affection and appreciation towards the women and their economic, political, and social achievements? Is the theme for this year’s woman’s day by UN, something related to “empowering women, empowering humanity?" So are only women the epitome of change for our society? Does this show equality to all the genders? Then where does gender equality come in the scene? Why do we have to observe a specific day to pay homage to the progress made by women? Again, what does this have to do with gender equality? Isn’t gender equality the basic idea of having equal rights for men and women in different situations, keeping in mind their individual qualities? Aren’t the women in our society providing with such privileges already? Or do they actually have any privileges? Don’t we live in a modern society that believes in secularism? Or is it just a thought? Then I guess us as humans provide each and every citizen, privileges on the basis of merit and not gender? Do we? But why are we bringing this topic up? Isn’t observing woman’s day equivalent to giving more power to women over men? Why don’t men have a day for themselves? Aren’t women progressing enough already? Then why are there still talks about how females in the society are not given equal status if they are equally qualified? Why do females still have to struggle to survive? Why do they constantly have to bring to light the need for equality or independence? In this changing society, hasn’t our outlook changed? There are laws regarding equality rights, aren’t there? Isn’t the society and government working for the betterment of females? Hasn’t everybody’s mindset changed? After all, this is a modern world, isn’t it? Do you really believe that?
