At its Hey Siri Media Event held in San Francisco today, Apple announced the hotly anticipated successors to its existing iPhones – the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Apple lifted the wraps off its flagships stating “the only thing that has changed is everything!”
The new iPhones are identical to the their predecessors in terms of display size and outer appearance. Like other ‘S’ iteration updates, it’s the internals that matter the most! For starters, the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus come with new stronger 7000 series aluminum, which according to Apple, is a custom-made alloy which is the same as they use in the aerospace industry. Both the smart phones also sport a new toughened glass covering which makes them “more durable” than any other smart phone.
What is more interesting than the new build, is the addition of another color finish – the Rose Gold finish. Apple’s new smart phones come in four colors including a Rose Gold option, found on the über expensive Apple Watch Edition.
The devices are powered by Apple’s custom A9 chip and embedded M9 motion coprocessor that deliver up to 70% faster CPU performance and up to 90% faster graphics compared to the A8 chip inside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The A9 Chip is Apple’s third gen 64 bit chipset that delivers, in Apple’s words, “desktop class performance.”
The iPhones also come with a new way of interaction dubbed as “3D Touch.” The basic concept of 3D Touch is that you press the screen a bit harder than a normal press and it will pop open context menu options pertaining to the particular app! It is just like right clicking in a Windows environment. 3D Touch on iPhone is similar to Force Touch on Apple Watch, enabling users to make “peek and pop” gestures on the screen to access actionable shortcuts or preview content, such as text messages, flight information, calendar appointments and more.
The iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus sport the biggest camera bump by Apple in ages. Along with an updated 12MP sensor, the new cameras shoot 4K video as well. The front camera has been upped to a 5MP shooter and instead of adding front facing flash, Apple has implemented a “retina flash” wherein your screen flashes about 3X brighter than usual which makes up for the flash!
There is also “Live Photos” an intutive little feature that can turn your photographs into miniature videos, more like GIFs. The camera app captures a second and a half on either side of the photo that you take, and when you tap the photo it will animate. Check it out:
Apple still starts its lineup at 16GB which is pretty low considering the addition of 4K support. This is where their discounted iCloud Storage Plans come in!
iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus pre-orders begin on Saturday, September 12 and starts shipping from September 25 in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The new iPhones will be available in over 130 countries by the end of the year which means the festive season for the Apple loyalists here in India.
Is this a compelling enough upgrade? If you are an iPhone 5 or 5s user, definitely. If you already use an iPhone 6, we would recommend holding your horses for the next-gen iPhone 7.
