As children, we are taught some rules that are said to be prevalent throughout life. Mostly at school when we are learning the basics of this world is when we are told some facets that are taken as the word of gospel and we don not bother to justify those either.
Oh well, you should have! Here are some false facts we have been believing throughout our life!
Mother birds will abandon baby birds if you touch them.
Birds can not really smell too well. A few species are an exception, but chances are vastly greater that the little chirping ball of fluff won’t suffer if you need to move it to the other side of the fence from where your dog plays. Plus, its parents have invested way too much time and energy raising it to just scoot off at the first opportunity, no matter how the little guy smells.
Your tongue has different taste receptors.
The tongue doesn’t actually have specific receptor areas for bitter, sour, salty, and sweet flavors. In fact, there is a fifth taste (umami, for savory/meaty flavors) and all zones of the tongue can sense all flavors. And this was not confirmed until the 20th century when scientists finally decided to research on this, for which a claim was already made by Kikunae Ikeda a Japanese chemist.
Your eyes pop out if you are placed in a vacuum.
A human body or any organism won’t comically explode if put into a vacuum. Rather, the lack of oxygen would cause you to lose consciousness and die after just a few minutes.
Primary colours cannot be formed by mixing other colours.
You were taught that primary colours are those that can’t be made by mixing other coloured pigments together, and that all other colours can by produced by blending these primary colours. False! You can make red by mixing yellow with magenta. While a blend of magenta with cyan yields blue. Meanwhile a massive range of hues are inaccessible if you start with just red, blue and yellow. Proof ? your colour printer cartridges, they come in cyan, yellow and magenta, which are the true primary colours.
Sunflowers follow the sun from east to west.
In reality, sunflowers always face east, it is the buds that face the sun before blooming in order to set the soon to be flower in the right direction.
Humans use only 10% of their brain.
Every part of the brain has its own functions. Some manage motor skills, while some manage memory. Even if only a few, the brain neurons in every part is constantly active and hence the fact is false. The movie, Lucy was misleading.
Drinking alcohol warms you up.
Drinking alcohol dilates (expands) blood vessels, bringing a higher quantity of warm blood to near-surface skin. Your body temperature actually lowers due to heat transfer between shallow vessels and the cold air.
Now you know.
