The second episode of Game of Thrones Season 5, the most anticipated series in recent history, opens with a face that was sorely missed in the first episode. We are, of course, talking about Arya Stark. We catch up with her just as she is entering the Free City of Braavos. Ternesio Terys(the captain of Titan’s Daughter) leaves Arya in front of “The House of Black and White” saying this is where she will find the person she is seeking.
When she knocks on the door, she presents the person opening the door with the coin and the saying ‘Valar morghulis’ as instructed by Jaqen H’ghar. Yet, the person on the door denies that anyone named such resides here. Disappointed but not yet disheartened she stays for days in front of the door reciting her ‘kill list’, ‘Cersei, Walder Frey, The Mountain, Meryn Trant’. However, after three days of no-show from Jaqen, she throws the coin in the water and leaves.
Meanwhile we catch up on Brienne and Podrick who we last saw just missing the convoy Sansa and Baelish. We see them entering an establishment where Sansa and Baelish are also present. Pod noticing this alerts Brienne who then introduces herself to Sansa and asks her to let her protect her and provide counsel to her on the behest of the late Lady Stark. Baelish however points out that Brienne has till now failed in protecting all of her lords and ladies and urges Sansa to not trust her. (The point is valid actually, but c’mon….you are going to trust littlefinger, Sansa ?? Has King’s Landing not taught you anything ?? Seriously ?) This leads to a disgreement, which in GoT world means sword fighting(in this case horseback sword fighting) and a heck a lot of deaths.
In King’s Landing, we see Cersei and Hamie opening a “gift ” from Dorne which turns out to be a stuffed snake with a necklace hanging from its jaws. Cersei enlightens us and Jamie that only two of its kind were made in the world, one which she wears and the other which she had given to Myrcella. Cersei guilts Jamie for not ever being a father to their children, and Jamie, guilt-striken (she is manipulating you !! why can’t you see that !!) offers himself to go to Dorne to bring Myrcella back. Jamie appeals to Bronn (Tyrion’s former sellsword) to come with him to Dorne which he accepts, after some persuasion (ahem…bribes….).
In Dorne, we see Ellaria Sand(Oberyn’s ‘paramour’) all decked up in black glaring hatefully at Myrcella Lannister. She urges Prince Doran Martell to take revenge against the Lannister’s for the death of his brother and sister by torturing Cersei through Myrcella. However, Doran refuses to bring innocents into this war. (Reminds me of Eddard…. I predict he will die soon).
Across the narrow sea, in the land of Essos, we catch up with Daenerys Targaryen where the Sons of Harpy have waged a silent war against her. Dany finds her first ray of hope when they catch one Son of Harpy. She decided that he will be given a trial, were proven guilty, he will be beheaded.
We finally come back to the hero of the show Tyrion Lannister who is riding with Varys to Meereen via Volantis. We see them having a pity party for themselves on the bad hand that life has dealt with them. (I don’t trust that Spider…..). Tyrion demands to be let as he feels like going for a walk. When Varys cautions him against this, he mockingly asks, “How many dwarfs in there, in the world ? Is Cersei going to kill them all ?” So, of course, the next shot is of Cersei being presented with the head of a dwarf.
In the council meeting, as her position of ‘Advisor’ to the king, she appoints, Mace Tyrell, the Master of Coins in addition to being Master of Ships. She also appoints Qyburn(who you might remember for treating Jamie after his hand got cut off), Master of Whisperers which comes as a huge shock to Grand Maester Pycell. She also appoints Kevin Lannister as Master of War. However, Kevin refuses to accept the position until and unless he hears it from the mouth of the king himself.
In the north, at the wall, Stannis offers Jon Snow to pledge himself to him and in return he will rename him Jon Stark. However Jon refuses the offer and thus finally establishes himself as one of the major player, a pike in the wheel so to say. During the elections for Lord Commander, Samwell nominates Jon for the position. Jon wins the title by a single vote.
We come round a circle (or wheel, geddit ?? Sorry, couldn’t resist it mate) back to Arya who is beheading pigeons for a lack of cats in the streets of Braavos. There, some locals try to steal Needle from her but are scared away by the stranger from earlier of the episode. When Arya demands him his identity, it turns out to be Jaqen itself wearing a mask. Jaqen allows her entry in the ‘House of Black and White’.
And finally, back in Meereen, Dany finds out that one of the unsullied has murdered her prisoner before he could stand for trial. Dany is thus forced to publicly execute him which leads to riots within the city.
