Nikon has quietly unveiled a selfie stick (N-MP001) accessory for some select Coolpix family models. The gadget costs $60 a piece and is available for pre-order at major US retailers (pre-order at Adorama or B&H ).
The stick, named N-MP001, is a standard Nikon-branded selfie stick that attaches to compatible cameras via the tripod mount and allows you to “conveniently and easily take self-portrait photos”. When collapsed, it is7.28 inches in length, and when fully extended, it is 28.54 inches in length. The Selfie Stick weighs only .41 lbs and can carry a camera with a weight of .88 lbs. The Selfie Stick features a foam grip for comfort and a hand strap for convenient carrying when not in use. A fixed pan-head allows you to easily change the position of the camera when it is attached to the Selfie stick.
This stick does not have Bluetooth though, whereas selfie sticks selling for $10 advertise Bluetooth tech, so it may raise some the eyebrows considering that this stick cost is over 10 times those local sticks. There will be a manual (timer) to activate the shutter.
Selfie sticks are becoming increasingly popular around the world, but the pushback is getting stronger as well. And considering that many museums and public venues are issuing bans on the sticks for the safety and enjoyment of their visitors and attendees, one can say that Nikon is late to to the Selfie Game.
