Samsung is all set on creating a phablet for your wrist. One glance at the featured image will make you ask two questions (apart from the "I want this shit" feeling): Is that the Galaxy Gear S2? Is it even for real? Well, the answer to both of the questions is a definitive yes! A recent patent filed by
Apple (damn! its been ages since Samsung filed a patent worth writing about!) Samsung showcases a Galaxy Grand equivalent of a smart watch. Confused? Let me make it a bit simpler, think of it as a phablet, wrapped around your wrist. That sounds so much, ermm.. Samsungy (not my words, thank BGR for that!).
On a serious note, this is perhaps the most ambitious project Samsung has ever undertaken since the Note lineup. After all the hype Apple Watch has received, Samsung wasn't about to sit this one out. The device, if it ever goes into production, will seriously change the face of werables and technology as we know it.
Imagine the scenario, you are watching your favorite video on the bus, once you get down, you simply slap the device on your wrist and be on your way. Simple as that! (read über cool)
For the techies, what Samsung is planning is a portable terminal which adjusts a display location on a screen such that a user's field of vision is secured when the portable terminal is bent to be worn on the wrist. According to the patent, the portable terminal will be able to deform in bending, folding, distorting, curving and the like.
Samsung notes that a sensor detects a physical situation of the portable terminal and reports the detected situation back to the controller. For example, the sensor includes a gravity sensor, a rotation sensor, an acceleration sensor, a Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor, a temperature sensor and the works.
If you are still not impressed, head over to PatentlyMobile's website and find out why we are gushing about this new development. But, in the heat of the moment let's not forget that Samsung has always preferred to be on the wrong side of the form vs functionality debate. A recent report stated that the Note 5 will sport the same dual edges as found on the S6 Edge series of smart phones. Samsung, if you are listening, do whatever you want, but please no dual edged phablet watch after this!
