You know how once you buy a Samsung smart phone, all other Samsung Phones look and feel the same? Well, it seems that Samsung has realized that and bought us the new Samsung Z1 with their home-grown mobile OS, Tizen which they hope will rival Android, Google's dominant Linux-based mobile OS. After a trio of failure of launches, Samsung Z1 will finally be available in the Indian market from today. The starting price being offered is 5,700 rupees. Samsung is aiming for the first-time smart phone buyers which I think is a good strategy as first-time buyers will not have much experience with the dominant Android and will not look for apps that they are already familiar with. To counteract that, Z1 does come with pre-installed apps and web links to services like Amazon.com, Flipkart, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo and Youtube. It also has an Indian touch in the sense that users will be able to have three-month subscription to music and Bollywood movie streaming services. Z1 buyers will also get free data from mobile operators Reliance Communications Ltd.[pull_quote_left author="Hyun Chil Hong"]We have customized the Samsung Z1 to meet these unique, entertainment-focused needs of local Indian consumers for a personal and reliable mobile experience[/pull_quote_left]Until now, Tizen had only been deployed in smart watches and Cameras. Only time will tell, if this move will be profitable for the company or not. The Tizen OS has around 1000 apps which really is pitiful compared to Android. Also, due to delays in the launch of this phone, developers are shying away from creating software applications for it. For Tizen, an OS which does not have much confidence from the developers, it will be really hard to tell if it will be a success or a flop. Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom has a long history of leaking accurate mobile specs. Unfortuately, Samsung Z1 also suffered the same fate. However, the launched Samsung Z1 does have minute differences. It now features a 3.1 megapixel rear camera instead of the leaked 3.0. Also, it has Bluetooth 4.1 and not 4.0. The 1GB of RAM has now been changed to 768MB. On the plus side, storage can now be expanded to 64GB instead of 32GB. If anyone is planning to buy or have bought the new Samsung Z1 or have any experience with Tizen, feel free to post a comment. Let me know how it works! (Editor's Note: Here's the convo when Pranali said that she was writing the article!) R: Samsung did another Bada?? When? P: It's Tizen. R: Whatever!
