This is the time of the year, when you feel the closest to your relatives. After all, the 12th and 10th Board Results are announced. Either you are going through that phase or have already lived it once and can’t help but feel sorry for the young ones; it is one of the biggest Indian phenomenons. Your percentage could be 90 or 60, and mostly you wouldn’t really care but what is truly taxing is to face the various senseless questions of people around you about your choice regarding future courses. Especially when you choose something from the stream of humanities/liberal arts. Be it the common core humanities of 11th and 12th or a specific major for your Bachelor’s degree (English, Economics, Statistics, Psychology, History, Sociology, Philosophy, Mathematics etc). Here are top 10 questions that kids studying humanities or liberal arts are tired of hearing: SO, YOU WANT TO TAKE UP LECTURESHIP AS A CAREER IN FUTURE? I REALLY DIDN’T KNOW YOU WERE INTO TEACHING! I believe everyone should consider teaching because educating people about the vast list of opportunities you’ll get in future takes a lot of proficiency. IS THERE ACTUALLY A FUTURE AFTER STUDYING ENGLISH OR PHILOSOPHY? Yes! Believe it or not, students these days know what they want to do and research for the same to know about it. Career counseling and education programs are attended by a majority of students and internet is feasible. Corporate Blogger, Public Relations, Journalism, Technical Writer, Civil Service, Law etc are all open avenues for them. OH! SO YOU WANT TO PREPARE FOR THE IAS/RAS EXAMS?! Not every graduate with liberal arts wants to go for the administrative jobs. Interest, passion, future prospects can also be the reason behind such choices. YOU STUDY ABOUT HUMAN MIND AND BEHAVIOR; CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT I’M THINKING THIS EXACT SECOND? No. WHY DID YOU TAKE SUCH SUBJECTS? Because he/she has significant interest in the subject? Not everyone can be a math ace or a science genius. Each have their own aptitude and skills and enhancing those ensures a better future than following the crowd. CAN YOU DO MBA AFTER THIS? Yes, one can,if one wants to. YOU HAVEN’T DECIDED WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, HAVE YOU? Even if there are doubts and confusions, the subjects are chosen after consideration, keeping the worst case scenario in mind, that's what grown ups teach you, don't they? POOR CHILD, WERE YOU NOT ABLE TO GET INTO THE COMMERCE COLLEGE? No, because he/she did not apply. The choice to take such courses is not always the last resort. It does vary from person to person, but just like science and commerce, it takes skills to understand and study such subjects as well. LITERATURE, HUH? DO YOU LIKE READING BOOKS SO MUCH? Yes. It may be one of the reasons, also one of the reasons for people being well-educated in such fields, but definitely not the only reason. BUT YOU HAD SCIENCE, WHY DID YOU GIVE IT UP ? Maybe because he/she did not like it? This is the time when people discover what they like and what they don’t. Some of them have figured it out and some of them haven’t. There are people who after completing their engineering, went to law school and now are graduating with Sociology Honors, while there are some who have taken a break of two years to figure out what they want. Sometimes, people are plain curious and just ask the wrong questions, which is completely fine. What is actually required at these times are only 2 things, support and positive criticism.
