In a shocking new development, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, has asked Pakistani Internet service providers to block the access of WordPress in Pakistan. As of now, the website is inaccessible on all major Pakistani ISPs.
Blogs hosted on WordPress.com are not accessible, however, the self hosted blogs work like a charm. We tried accessing several wordpress.com blogs using a Pakistani IP and couldn’t access any of the blogs confirming for a fact that Pakistan has indeed issued a ban on such sites.
Users trying to access the sites are served with the above error screen instead. There is no official word from the PTA as of now as to why the ban has been imposed but rumor has it that it is a temporary ban, much like the Government of India did with the #GOIBlocks.
According to a local news site, “PTA was just granted the powers to monitor content on Internet and block any indecent, blasphemous or anti state website. Previously such decisions were made by inter-ministerial committee that was dissolved on directions of a recently issued court order. Prime minister of Pakistan, after inter-ministerial committee was dissolved, granted PTA the authority to control content on the Internet.”
ProPakistani, a local news agency, claims that a source at Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has confirmed that WordPress.com is temporarily blocked in Pakistan due to severe issues related to national security. It appears now that blocking decision is somewhat related to Pakistan day.
Source, who wanted to remain unnamed, said that exact content that caused the blockade can’t be revealed due to seriousness of the matter.
Source further confirmed that WordPress.com will be unblocked in two days from now.
