Yu, the infamous subsidiary of Micromax, added yet another smartphone to its lineup with the launch of Yu Yunicorn. The device claims to "redefine flagships," is priced at
Rs. 12,999 Rs. 14,999 and will be a Flipkart exclusive with sales starting today at 2:00PM (the price of Rs. 12,999 will be applicable for the first month and will increase to 14,999 after that). It will also be available at offline retail channels at a later stage.
Before we move onto the usual specs, the design of the smartphone is worth talking about. The Yu Yunicorn sports a metal unibody design with chamfered edges. The back sports a brushed metal look that will instantly remind you of some one of the *ahem* more expensive smartphones. There is also a physical home button that doubles up as a fingerprint scanner.
With a 1.8GHz MediaTek Helio P10 paired with Mali T860 and 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, the Yunicorn looks great on paper. There is 32GB on internal memory that can be further expanded upto 128GB via the microSD card slot. The back houses a 13MP auto-focus snapper with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and 1080p video recording. There is a 5MP front camera for them selfie lovers. It's powered by a 4000mAh battery rated to deliver up to 20 hours of talk time, and 500 hours of standby time.
Yu has also made a few great changes to the software. The Yu Yunicorn comes with Around YU 2.0, which the company lovingly calls, Android on Steroids! Around Yu has been built with the end-user in mind. Yu promises all the services at a single screen. With Around Yu, one can look for food options from Zomato, shopping deals from Scandid, travel deals from Ixigo, cab options from the likes of Ola etc. Yu has also launched a digital wallet called Udio. There is bundled unlimited cloud data storage plus a six month free Gaana subscription.
We will have to wait and see as to how successfully the Yunicorn redefines flagships. The Yutopia turned out to be a disappointment and Yu has its hopes pinned on a Yunicorn now, pun intended!
