The 22-year-old One direction band member, Zayn Malik officially announced his retirement from the band. The rumors about him leaving the band were going since a long time but he confirmed it all by his tweet.
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band.” Zayn tweeted.
Soon after his announcement, the internet was flooded with grief. Plenty of fans were feeling let down and they are letting the whole world know about it on Twitter. The fans flocked to Twitter to express themselves. The trend started as “#AlwaysinOurHeartZaynMalik” and soon after that there started trending the hashtag “#cutforzayn” where the directioners are slitting their wrists to bring him back.
The trend is like a threat to force Zayn to not leave the band and stay. This trending hashtag seems to promote self harm and manipulate his decision. The hashtag #cutforzayn is deeply disturbing and is hard to cope up with. The depressing hashtag was opposed by other people as it promotes self harm. The people are advised not to indulge in this self harm and use other means to show their sorrow towards it .
The #cutforzayn was asked to be removed from trending. Some of the organizations are trying to help the families of the fans who are finding it difficult to deal with it and are trying to stop this self harm.
Jesse Miller with Mediated Reality says this is not shocking. “We saw the same thing with Justin Bieber a couple of years ago,” he said. “This is attached to fandom and the use of social media and really getting people to talk about what their passion is. Unfortunately it’s taking a turn towards mental health issues that we see in kids cutting.”
